Stori Fawr Dre-fach Felindre

Unveiling of the Daniel Jenkins Memorial

Saturday, 27 June, 2pm at St Barnabas Church, Felindre

Following the success of their Open Day at Penboyr Church last year, the friends of the “Stori Fawr Dre-fach Felindre” website will be holding an Open Afternoon this year at St Barnabas Church in the village on Saturday, 27 June at 2pm, and everyone is warmly invited to attend.

The two greatest musicians the Dre-fach Felindre area has seen are buried near the main entrance to St Barnabas Church in the village. The memorial to DANIEL JENKINS was in an unstable condition and the inscription on it had deteriorated. Therefore, through co-operation with the church, the Friends of the ‘Stori Fawr Dre-fach Felindre’ Website arranged to renovate the memorial, and the work has now been completed. The intention is to re-dedicate the memorial at 2 o’clock on Saturday, June 27th, 2026, and also visit the grave of ALBERT EVANS, which is nearby.

In addition to being brilliant musicians, their musical contribution to the area was so important – Daniel Jenkins was the conductor of Bargod Teifi Male Voice Choir, winners of the National Eisteddfod in Carmarthen in 1911 and when Daniel Jenkins died suddenly in 1917, Albert Evans became the conductor of the choir from 1919 to 1955 (36 years) and the leader of the Dre-fach Felindre Silver Band as well. Daniel Jenkins was Headmaster of Felindre National School (1892-1917) and choirmaster and organist at Saint Barnabas Church and an untiring music tutor.

The afternoon’s programme:
2.00 pm - Unveiling of the newly refurbished memorial by Peter Moody, Warden of Saint Barnabas Church and former Chairman of  Ysgol Penboyr Governors.
2.15 pm - Inside Saint Barnabas Church:
Presentation on Saint Barnabas Church by Mari Elin.
